How political is the Obama bike tour? Not really. There are a number of Obama tours around, and this is one of the most fun. There are two levels: the Obama Stimulus Package, which brings you along the Lake Michigan bike path, by the Field Museum, to Hyde Park and back, and there's Obama's Easy Chicago Tour, slightly cheaper, two hours shorter, beginning and ending at the Hyde Park Art Center. Here's some photos from the tour:
The better deal is the Stimulus Package, if only for the spectacular views. But Obama-wise, Easy Chicago folks miss only a brief gander at Grant Park, site of Obama's Election Night victory speech. Otherwise, the tours are identical, a nice mix of serious and trivial stops in Hyde Park.
What a wonderful setting. But how about a little truth? Why not extend the tour to visit these wonderful places contained in Obama's own Congressional district? The very fruits of his hope and change philosophy?
The land that hope and change built.
As a state senator, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee coauthored an Illinois law creating a new pool of tax credits for developers. As a US senator, he pressed for increased federal subsidies. And as a presidential candidate, he has campaigned on a promise to create an Affordable Housing Trust Fund that could give developers an estimated $500 million a year.
But a Globe review found that thousands of apartments across Chicago that had been built with local, state, and federal subsidies - including several hundred in Obama's former district - deteriorated so completely that they were no longer habitable.
Grove Parc and several other prominent failures were developed and managed by Obama’s close friends and political supporters. Those people profited from the subsidies even as many of Obama’s constituents suffered. Tenants lost their homes; surrounding neighborhoods were blighted.
And here are the hope and changelings. They seem pretty pissed off. Will they be taking the bike tour?
More from the people of the land of hope and change.
More on Obama's district. This too, can be yours, America.
So. When can I sign up for the "real" bike tour?
