Yeah. I'd say the test would be a good idea. Damn!

The fate of controversial South African 800 metres runner Caster Semenya remains unclear with international athletics officials believed to be meeting in Berlin this morning to decide if the 18-year-old will be permitted to race in the final.

With the women's final on tonight, Semenya is at the centre of a storm regarding whether she is a woman, or a man, or something in between.

Semenya has come from obscurity to race favouritism in the two-lap slog. The teenager from Pretoria has raised eyebrows due to her stocky, muscular physique and apparently masculine characteristics, including facial hair.

The Age understands that various tests have been performed on Semenya, including a ''physical check'' and genetic screening as officials scramble to resolve the question of her gender.
